33047 Spitfire - named at Eastleigh Depot by Driver David Orchard on 18th April 1991 following a competition within the depot for a set of names for the EH civils 33's. Driver Orchard came up with the idea to name the fleet after the designs of RJ Mitchell, many of which were tested at the nearby Southampton 'airport'. Only 047 was named with ceremony. Two names, 'Supermarine' and 'RJ Mitchell' were never ultimately carried although the SELG rectified this in 2005 when 33063 was named RJ Mitchell, a ceremony at which David Orchard was fittingly present. 33047 was denamed on 23/1/93 after the locomotive suffered collision damage at Hoo Junction on 21/12/92 1024x768 |
